Mark Rijpkema studied chemistry at the Radboud University of Nijmegen, where he graduated in 1996 with two majors: Pharmacology and Microbiology. After graduation he worked at the department of Radiology of the University Medical Center Nijmegen, first as junior researcher, and later as PhD student in close collaboration with the department of Radiotherapy. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2003 with his thesis ‘MR imaging and MR spectroscopy to guide treatment selection for patients with tumours in the brain and head-neck region’. Subsequently, he worked as a postdoc at the University of Utrecht. In 2006, he moved back to Nijmegen to work at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience of the Donders Institute, where he started a research line investigating the genetic underpinnings of brain structure and function (Brain Imaging Genetics project), in close collaboration with the Human Genetics department of the Radboud University Medical Center. In 2011 he returned to the field of oncology at the department of Nuclear Medicine (TRACER group) and started his own research group working on molecular imaging in translational research, focusing on intraoperative fluorescence imaging and multimodal image-guided surgery.
